With joblessness at the high it is currently at, hovering over 9%, it looks like every one of those teens who have recently finished the school year are having a pretty tough time finding jobs. Because there are a lot of adults currently on the lookout for work, many are accepting anything they can find, including those jobs usually reserved for out of school teens. The Bureau of Labor Statistics had a current survey that tracked a decline in the level of teenagers that are participating in the job market this year versus last year; its fallen 3%. So with the deficiency of jobs, what are teens doing? Well, it appears as though theyre forgoing the paying jobs to volunteer and do other non-paying jobs throughout the summer, if for nothing else, solely to dodge of the house for a a small number of hours per day. Some teens are even becoming entrepreneurs in their own right. Some have taken advantage of the time of year and begun forming their own businesses for the summer, like lawn maintenance or pool cleaning. The best division of these teens beginning these jobs on their own is that they can employ their friends and usually earn more than minimum wage at which time there is work. Right now the jobless rate for 16 to 19 year old span is 21.5%, thats up from 15.4% in 2008. When you look at those levels, you have to remember that only includes the teens that are really vigorously seeking employment, not those who arent. I know that it is still tough to attain work. Residing in a university town, there are always college students seeking work, append on top of that out of school teenagers, then the detail that none of the businesses do the same total of commerce over the summer as they do during a semester and its on the whole a formula for high unemployment. There are a few restaurants looking for employees, but its all only part time work and the hours are skimpy at best. Subsequently, there are just a lot of adults that have families to feed that are looking for work at the same locations. If I were a boss at one of the locations where teens more often than not go to find work, then I would be much more likely to hire the man or woman who needs to feed their family before I employed a 16 year old who just needs to put some minutes on their pay-as-you-go phone.
