Is Your Baby Nursery Bedding Harmful?

Over 6000 cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) are reported each year, and more than 900 of these are due to babies' soft baby bedding sets. That brings to mind the question, is your baby bedding safe?
Suffocation can occur with the use of soft baby bedding, particularly when baby is on her belly and her head depresses the mattress. You may think a soft mattress is more comfortable for your little one, but if it is too soft, it may not be safe. Infants are not physically able to roll over and "save" themselves from the dangerous position on a soft mattress. They are not yet strong enough, and this can be fatal if no one is around to watch the baby.
The mattress chosen for a baby must be very firm so that it will not get depressed due to the weight of the baby. The strenght of the mattress can be assessed by pressing one hand against the mattress with the resisting force. This is a simple way to assess a mattress. The more resistance a mattress demonstrates, the better the mattress.
Bumper pads are often added to a crib to give it a designer look; but a baby can suffocate if he becomes stuck with his face pressed into one.
As a parent, it is necessary to take extra precautions during this weak and vulnerable period in a baby's life. Parents need to make a choice between wanting cute and wanting what's safest for the baby. If the parents should choose the latter, they should take out all the bumper pads from the crib and refrain from putting anything that might cause danger to their babies again.
In addition, recent research has revealed that there are toxic gases in mattresses that can be detrimental to your baby's development. Dangerous chemicals have been found to be added to mattresses as fire retardants, but they are dangerous chemical compounds containing phosphorus and arsenic. Babies may die while sleeping as a result of inhaling hazardous chemicals that have reacted with other chemicals found in mattresses.
Scientists have since found, however, that a frequently occurring fungus in baby bedding may be one of the reactants which is an aid in releasing these toxic fumes. Because of that, they suggest that mom and dads not use any older style bedding in the baby's room that could have mold and/or mildew on it from being used prior. Babies crib bedding should not be reused from one baby to another because old bedding can carry fungus. New bedding in a baby's room is far more welcoming than recycled.
Using these guidelines, it should be easy for a parent to determine if their baby's nursery bedding is safe. All the parents can sleep nicely in the night without any worries when they choose a safe bedding for their babies, if they did this their babies sound and a safe sleep.

In addition, there is some concern about synthetic fabric in baby bedding sets. While there is no solid proof that synthetic fabrics are harmful to a baby, you may want to stick to natural fibers. There are plenty of stylish cotton baby crib bedding sets available (one of my favorites is the Maya baby bedding by Trend Lab), so there is no need to sacrifice style for safety.
